{"id":213,"date":"2022-11-25T05:21:31","date_gmt":"2022-11-25T05:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Louvre\/?page_id=213"},"modified":"2024-01-02T12:41:55","modified_gmt":"2024-01-02T12:41:55","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/","title":{"rendered":"Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Venice<\/h2>\n<p>To <strong>\u2018visit Venice before you die\u2019<\/strong> is on many a bucket list, probably because it is one of the most beautiful and extraordinary places in the world.\u00a0 This floating city with no cars is an engineering marvel that has endured the shifting tides of the Venetian lagoon and remains, relatively unchanged since Renaissance times.\u00a0 From a small group of settlers fleeing barbarian invasions, Venice developed to become the strongest maritime empire of its day at the center of a trade network that reached as far as China.<\/p>\n<h2>Location<\/h2>\n<p>Venice consists of 118 man-made islands nestled in an enclosed, shallow, bay of 200 square miles of salt water between Italy and Yugoslavia.\u00a0 The shallow waters of the Venetian lagoon protected it from attack and its location on the <strong>Adriatic<\/strong> allowed access and trading links by sea to the East which enabled the Venetian maritime trade empire to grow. Today the islands are accessed by a long two-mile road, but originally the islands were unreachable from the land or the sea.<\/p>\n<p>The Venetian lagoon was populated by settlers from the mainland who fled to escape Atilla the Hun at the end of the Roman empire.\u00a0 The first settlements were on the islands, legends tell how the settlers were shown how to reach the islands by fishermen who knew the canals.\u00a0 The islands are made of sand and mud, not solid ground; so, the first settlers built wooden houses on stilts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-2-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-989 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-2-1024x562.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-2-1024x562.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-2-300x165.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-2-768x421.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-2-1536x843.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-2-2048x1123.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-2-1568x860.jpg 1568w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ancient Fisherman\u2019s hut on the islands<\/p>\n<h2>Building the city<\/h2>\n<p>The first settlers in the lagoon built on what little land or stable base they could find.\u00a0 Venice is a city built entirely on water, an engineering miracle and a testament to the ingenuity and the skill of its builders.\u00a0\u00a0 Essentially a city on stilts, the first foundations were created by driving wooden stakes into the mud and then laying planks across the stakes, which were stabilised and then fortified with bricks and eventually slabs of stone.\u00a0 The technique proved effective and lasting and over time the city developed, more islands were created with canals and bridges to cross them.<\/p>\n<p>Today it is called the <strong>\u2018sinking city\u2019<\/strong> because the same water of the lagoon that saved the early Venetians threatens to destroy the city today.\u00a0 Venice is essentially built on piles of wooden nails that are centuries old and rotting.\u00a0 <strong>Every few years each canal must be blocked, drained and the bricks removed so that the wooden piles beneath the buildings can be repaired.<\/strong>\u00a0 It is a monumental task to keep the city from sinking which isn\u2019t helped by the increased traffic on the canals, every boat that passes creates waves that erode the cement from the brickwork keeping the buildings upright.\u00a0 This is why cruise ships have been banned!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-3-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-991 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-3-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-3-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-3-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-3-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-3-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-3-1568x882.jpg 1568w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Torcello<\/p>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<p>The early Venetians were fisherman and salt workers who swapped their produce for wood, wheat and wine from the mainland.\u00a0 Trade was the very beginning of Venice and would earn them their fame.\u00a0 Salt was a precious commodity and provided the Venetians with the riches that founded the city.\u00a0 By the turn of the first millennia the people who had escaped to the lagoon had become traders and sailors, Venice would emerge as a maritime empire and a republic.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>first settlement<\/strong> was the island of <strong>Torcello<\/strong> 8 km to north of Venice and the other islands were built soon after. The first basilica <strong>Santa Maria Assunta<\/strong>, was built in 639 AD, it is decorated in mosaic.\u00a0 The first Christian images of Venice came from the east before it was Islamic, which developed into the Venetian Gothic we know today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-4-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-992 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-4-1024x662.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-4-1024x662.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-4-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-4-768x496.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-4-1536x993.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-4-2048x1324.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-4-1568x1014.jpg 1568w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the early 800s the islands were attacked from the sea and the Venetians fled further into the lagoon looking for protection.\u00a0 According to legend an <strong>old woman led them through the lagoon<\/strong>, simply saying \u2018sempre dritto\u2019 go straight.\u00a0 She pointed them to a place called <strong>Rivo Alto \u2018the high bank\u2019<\/strong> which would become the city we know today and the namesake of Venice\u2019s most famous bridge the <strong>Rialto<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Here on this higher ground the Venetians were protected from the land by the waters of the lagoon, and the shifting sand flats and shallow water made it impossible to attack from the sea.\u00a0\u00a0 As they had on the islands, they made a new home \u2013 a place to live and work.\u00a0 The islands of the <strong>Rivo Alto<\/strong> became the greatest network of canals ever created.\u00a0 Each square had its own tightly knit community and tightly packed housing.\u00a0 Each bridge was a step into another territory and feuds could spark between the communities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-5-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-993 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-5-1024x762.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"558\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-5-1024x762.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-5-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-5-768x572.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-5-1536x1144.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-5-2048x1525.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/dev1.kindlebit.com\/Development\/Venice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMAGE-5-1568x1168.jpg 1568w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Government<\/h2>\n<p>Relations between the peoples of these small islands were not easy and it became clear that Venice needed a strong government.\u00a0 A ruler and system of government emerged unlike any other, Venice became a <strong>Republic<\/strong> with an elected ruler known as the <strong>Doge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Doge of Venice was the supreme head of state and all institutions, his title comes from the Latin Dux, leader.\u00a0 But unlike other leaders, the Doge of Venice did not have sole control; he was elected and his decisions and actions were supervised by the <strong><em>Signoria <\/em><\/strong>or<strong><em> Minor Consiglio<\/em><\/strong> who had the power to veto.\u00a0 The cabinet and executive arm of the government was known as the <strong><em>Collegio<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 The \u2018<strong>Council of Ten\u2019<\/strong> had authority over all government actions and the \u2018<strong><em>Pregadi\u2019<\/em><\/strong> or <strong>senate<\/strong> consisted of 120 men who oversaw legislation.\u00a0 Finally, the <strong><em>Maggior Consiglio<\/em><\/strong> consisted of up to 2,000 men whose duties were mostly electoral.\u00a0 The Venetian Republic was unique in that elections were held to elect officials, who in turn, elected more officials, it was a dizzying system that ensured that corruption and singular power was almost impossible.<\/p>\n<p>It was an extraordinary form of government close to our modern ideas of democracy with advanced ideas of social unity, justice and government.\u00a0 Venetian citizens generally supported the system, they were even able to participate by posting accusations of illegal activity in specially constructed letter boxes around the palace that look like <strong>faces with mouths<\/strong>.\u00a0 Although there were strict laws and the Republic employed ruthless tactics in the prisons, Venice earned the nickname <strong>La Serenissima<\/strong> \u2018the most serene\u2019 thanks to the absence of civil strife and countless wars.<\/p>\n<p>Although the Doge was the head of the Republic, he too was subject to strict rules.\u00a0 He could not speak to any foreigners without supervision and <strong>even letters to his wife went through a censor<\/strong>.\u00a0 Although he lived like a king, he was expected to provide his own furniture!
