Gondolas were leased to boatman called Gondoliers who made the rounds of the city’s landing docks. Passengers paid a fare to be carried from one side of the Grand Canal to the other, as well as to other points around the city. The gondoliers soon developed a bad reputation, from extorting passengers to occasional acts of violence. Perhaps this is why Venetian citizens who could afford it, purchased their own gondolas just as people use a chauffeur driven car today. These wealthy venetians hired private gondoliers to ferry them around the city and maintain their boats.

Pimp my Ride

The gondola soon became a status symbol like an expensive car with custom fittings. Carved and gilded ornamentation was added to the boats and luxurious fabrics like silk and velvet. Some gondolas were fitted with a private cabin that could be closed with curtains or a door for privacy. These private gondolas became so ostentatious that in 1562, the Venetian authorities decreed that all gondolas (except ceremonial ones) should be painted black to avoid sinfully extravagant displays. But some wealthy venetians continued to use their ornamental gondolas, choosing to pay the fines in order to keep up appearances.

The distinctive look of the gondola and its asymmetrical shape is unique; a gondola has no straight lines or edges and is designed to glide through shallow narrow, canals. Today’s gondola is up to 11 m long and 1.6 m wide, weighing around 350 kg and can take two to three months to finish.

Originally the wood was lined up against a template and the curved profile was achieved through an impressive fire and water process that warped the boards with torches made of marsh reeds. Even with the Woodwork finished, the gondola was still not complete. Specialized artisans supplied the gondola makers with fittings and ornaments, upholstery or elaborate covered passenger compartments. However, the most important part of the gondola –
